Dublin is Ireland’s biggest county in terms of population and the density of homes and buildings, and it continues to expand outwards towards surrounding counties. The River Liffey divides the county into distinct northside and southside regions, each with their own appeal and characteristics. North County Dublin is more agricultural while the south county is more commercial and residential. History and Heritage
Dublin comes from the Irish Dubh Linn, meaning ‘dark pool’, and it was settled first by the Vikings, then the 
Danes and then the Normans and has always been a focus of political, religious and cultural upheaval, especially in 1916 with the Easter Rising which led to Irish independence and the formation of the Irish State.
Its history and heritage is inextricably linked with that of the entire country and is well recorded and documented in various locations around the city and county. Unlike most European capital cities, entry into the museums and heritage centres are usually free, which makes them even more attractive to visitors. The ‘Dublin Pass’ helps visitors move around the city more easily and cost-effectively.

Sports and Leisure
You name it, Dublin has it in sporting and leisure terms. Apart from GAA – the magnificent Croke Park stadium is a major landmark - Dublin caters for everything from soccer to rugby and from cricket to tennis.
It has some of Ireland’s finest golf courses, including the famous Portmarnock championship course and Royal Dublin Golf Club, and new clubs have been established over the years to meet the ever-increasing demand for the sport.
Sailing is big along the Dublin coast, from Howth, Malahide and Skerries in north Dublin to the four waterfront clubs in Dun Laoghaire, with several marinas in the area to cater for visiting boats.
Eat, Drink and Stay
As befits one of Europe’s most cosmopolitan capitals, Dublin has every conceivable type of eating establishment available, not least because there are so many different nationalities living in the city and surrounds.
The best restaurants in Dublin are on a par with the best in the world, the most highly rated including Chapter One, L’Ecrivain, Restaurant Patrick Guilbaud and Thornton’s. However, Dublin city and county can cater for every budget and every taste, with everything from fast-food to ethnic, and everything in between. Temple Bar in the city centre is well worth checking out for its sheer diversity.
If it has a reputation for food, Dublin is probably even better known for its pubs which are part and parcel of the local culture. Some of the best known in the city are the long-established Doheny & Nesbitt’s, Davy Byrnes, Mulligan’s, Kehoe’s, O’Donoghue’s, The Old Stand and Ryans of Parkgate Street. In the county, pubs like Gibneys of Malahide, the Abbey Tavern in Howth, McCormack’s of Dun Laoghaire and The Queen’s in Dalkey are hugely popular.
Because of its sheer size and the numbers of visitors every year, Dublin is literally awash with top class B&B accommodation, both in the city centre and in the suburbs.
